Leonardo DiCaprio’s foundation called Earth Alliance has dedicated a $3 million fund to provide relief from the bushfire crisis.
The Earth Alliance, which “addresses the urgent threats to our planet’s life support systems” according to their website, has launched the Australia Wildfire Fund with the purpose of assisting firefighters and communities affected by raging fires.
In addition, the fund will also contribute to ensuring the long-term recovery of the bushfire-struck areas and the country’s ecosystems and biodiversity.
The foundation, which was co-founded by the actor, was established in 2019 to address persisting global issues including climate change.
The Earth Alliance is co-chaired by Leonardo DiCaprio, investor Brian Sheth, and philanthropist Laurene Powell Jobs.
Previously, in November, the 45-year-old actor expressed his stand on the bushfire crisis in Australia and shared a post of an organization called Aussie Ark in which they claimed that the intensity of fires could be mitigated by “restoring our native ecosystem engineers.”
“Australian conservation efforts need a radical overhaul. Mitigating the intensity of these fires, mostly set by humans and their activities, can be achieved by restoring our native ecosystem engineers, such as bandicoots, bettongs and potoroos,” the conservation foundation wrote.
“These species help to maintain healthy forests by continually turning over and breaking down forest leaf litter, thereby drastically reducing fuel load. In their absence, fires are more intense, often reaching the treetops, which can affect populations of species already on the brink, like the koala.”
According to the estimations, the Australia bushfire crisis that has started in September had taken the lives of over one billion animals and ravaged thousands of homes and buildings. In addition, the fires have cost 26 people their lives.
