At just twelve years old, Lexi Brown was receiving chemotherapy for a sarcoma that spread cancer to her lungs.
When her heart began to fail, she was airlifted to the Mattel Children’s Hospital UCLA in California. She was fighting for her life.
As her stay at UCLA dragged on, Lexi and her mom began making signs to put in their hospital room window. It was a creative way for the family to pass the time and take their minds off of everything. One day, as a joke, they made a sign requesting pizza be delivered to their room.
Little did they know, their request was about to granted by an unlikely group of people — a UCLA fraternity.
The Sigma Alpha Epsilon house at UCLA sits directly across the street from Lexi’s window. The members of the house heard about the little girl in the window and decided to make her day.
They showed up with the pizza, a bouquet of roses, and a guitar. After the brothers of SAE spent time chatting with Lexi, they quickly realized they wanted to do even more to make her stay at UCLA a little better.
They arranged visits from UCLA’s football team, as well as women’s tennis players. The SAE brothers kept coming back, too. They got to know Lexi and brought her stuffed animals and games to play together. The hospital staff would even let the guys stay past visiting hours some nights.
But nothing was quite as touching as what they did next.
Every year, the members of SAE decorate their house for the holidays. This year, they decided to incorporate their new friend Lexi into the celebration.
They put Lexi’s name into the roof, along with her favorite color, purple. They even added a flashing, beating heart. The sight of the house filled little Lexi with joy and brought her mother to tears. They had no idea that their goofy sign for pizza was going to start such a beautiful and unlikely friendship.

Lexi has since moved back home to continue her battle with cancer. Members of the SAE fraternity have been donating money to help her family pay the hospital bills.
