Sometimes there’s a story that is so incredible that it goes beyond our wildest dreams.
The saying “reality is stranger than fiction” often comes to mind. This story is certainly up there in with how unbelievable it is!
Angela Shymanski was driving through the Canadian Rockies after a family vacation with her daughter, 5-year-old Lexi and her son, 10-week-old Peter. Her husband had to stay at their home for work. They had just enjoyed a nice vacation in Calgary and were going back to their home in Prince George, British Columbia.

According to the CBC, Angela had put in an audio CD into the car to play a relaxing lullaby. In a horrifying twist, Angela fell asleep at the wheel. The car quickly veered off the road and tumbled down 40 feet below, into a tree right next to a creek.
Angela was immediately knocked unconscious her back was broken due to the collision with the tree. With her back broken, it seemed very unlikely that they would find help anytime soon. Although they had veered off the road, there wasn’t any signs that there had been a recent car crash on the road. But then Lexi, Angela’s 5-year-old daughter, woke up after the crash. She had a few scratches, but was relatively unharmed during the crash, miraculously.

Lexi looked around and saw that her mother was unconscious and her brother, 10-week-old peter was crying and bleeding.point 116 | That’s when Lexi decided she was going to get out of her five-point harness child safety seat.point 200 | Lexi had only managed to ever do this once before, so it’s an absolutely miracle that she managed to do this immediately after a car crash.point 320 |

That’s not all that little Lexi did, however.point 44 | Lexi then began to make her way up the 40 feet slope, back to the highway.point 103 | Lexi was barefoot and disorientated from the car crash, but still managed to make her way up, back to the street where she began to flag down drivers.point 226 |
When two kind strangers pulled over, Lexi immediately told them the story and pointed them to the car crash 40 feet down the cliff.point 108 | That’s when the kind strangers immediately called the paramedics, who arrived mere minutes later.point 200 | 1

When Angela finally woke up, she was staring at a stranger who explained the entire situation to her. Then before she knew it, her and children were being airlifted to a local hospital so they could seek medical help as soon as possible.
Your little girl, she shiked up this embankment and flagged us down. Don’t worry they’re [Angela’s children] both up at the top, at the highway and they’re fine.

Through Lexi’s incredible thinking and strength, she managed to save not only her little brother, but her mother as well! Peter suffered only a minor, temporary bleed and Lexi only had a few scratches on her body. However Angela suffered from more serious wounds, including fractures and a broken back, but she is slowly recovering back to full strength.

It would be difficult for even a teenager to make their way up a 40 foot steep embankment, barefoot immediately after a car crash, but this little 5-year-old girl was able to beat the odds.point 155 | In an interview with the CBC, Angela explainspoint 193 | 1
Even now a month and a half later, I still can’t believe what she was able to do. [She] climbed up 12 metres of a steep embankment. She was in bare feet.
