Footage showing a severe lice infestation in a young girl’s hair has sparked a debate on the internet.
21-year-old Rachel Maroun is a professional head lice technician from Australia who recently managed to turn the stomachs of her followers upside down by sharing a shocking video showing an extreme infestation.
In her video, the Sydney-based worker is seen removing hundreds of lice full of blood from the hair and scalp of a 13-year-old girl.
In the stomach-churning footage, the insects can be seen crawling around the girl’s scalp with little to no space left for them to move.
After the clip went viral, some viewers were quick to blame the girl’s parents as they suggested this was a case of child neglect.
Others, however, couldn’t understand how the young girl was able to endure having thousands of insects crawling on her scalp and drinking her blood for months.
“We have a massive treatment today so get your hair nets and let’s get into it. So my first thought when a client comes in like this is, ‘Oh my god. This is a whole dang lot,’” Maroun said in her video.
“My other thought is, ‘Can we shave the hair?’ Sometimes we do shave hair but I didn’t want to do that to a 13-year-old girl with long hair.”
As she proceeded with the treatment, the lice technician added: “As you can see these lice are just having an absolute rave in her hair, they have just completely taken control. I think there were more lice than strands of hair on her head.
“There was no more space in her hair so they were crawling onto her face and drinking blood out of her face.”
Despite the severity of the infestation, the 13-year-old allegedly remained calm throughout the procedure as Maroun carefully removed the lice and their eggs.
Maroun also explained that the girl was not neglected by her parents as she insisted they didn’t find out about the severity of her infestation because the special needs child “wasn’t able to communicate that she had lice until much later.”
“I had a lot of pressure for that case. I understand that lockdown really limited the family’s ability to seek professional help,” the technician said.
“They were dealing with a case of super lice and the client wouldn’t let her parents do her hair due to over-stimulation, so they left it all up to me.
“It’s pretty rare to see such severe cases but when it does happen it’s always a shock. I couldn’t believe someone could’ve had them for that long and managed to be okay with it.”
As Maroun explained, the girl couldn’t stop smiling due to “indescribable relief” after her hair finally became completely clear.
