A letter written by a World War II soldier was finally delivered 76 years after it was lost.
Johnny Gonsalves was a US Army Sergeant from Massachusetts who served with the 2nd Armored Division and was stationed in Germany during World War II.
On December 6, 1945, just months after the war was officially over, the then-22-year-old man penned a touching letter addressed to his mother.
“Dear, Mom. Received another letter from you today and was happy to hear that everything is okay,” the young man wrote.
“As for myself, I’m fine and getting along okay. But as far as the food it’s pretty lousy most of the time.”
He added: “Give my love to the family in regards to all. Take care, love and kisses your son Johnny. I’ll be seeing you soon I hope.”
Since Johnny’s mother is no longer alive, the two-page letter was delivered to the man’s wife, Angelina Gonsalves, with whom he tied the knot shortly after returning from the war.
As Angelina explained, she and her husband remained married for 61 years until he passed away in 2015 at the age of 92.
“I loved him dearly and he was quite a guy. I still feel his presence, I really do,” Gonsalves said in an interview with CBS Boston.
As she added, she simply loved reading the letter her husband had sent to his mother all those years ago.
“I love it, I love it. When I think it’s all his words, I can’t believe it. It’s wonderful. And I feel like I have him here with me, you know?” Gonsalves expressed.
Though the letter didn’t make it to its intended recipient, the delivery was made possible thanks to postal workers who tracked down the soldier’s widow after the letter showed up at a post office in Pittsburgh.
