As the world is living under lockdown for nearly a month now and outdoor activities are looking like something out of a fairytale, people are putting on fancy dresses for household chores like taking the bin out.
A Facebook group, going by the name Put Your Bins Out IN Your Ballgown, has recently got popularity, which means thousands of members.
The purpose of this group is pretty much the same as the name; you go out to dump your trash all suited up.
People have tried to take it even further and there’ve been fellas mowing their lawn wearing a tuxedo and ladies wearing wedding dresses for jogging on the treadmill.
The group was created by 43-year-old Angie Emrys, who also runs non-profit Cornwall Accessible Activity Program.
Angie got the nomination for a national award but the awards ceremony, like a number of other gatherings, was postponed due to corona.
In order to use the fancy dress that she procured for the awards ceremony, Angie, from Truro in Cornwall, started wearing it at home.
She also shared a bunch of selfies wearing it with her friends.
Angie got a very positive response on her selfies so she started suggesting others do the same by creating the said Facebook group.
She said: “On 20 March it was Friday night and we were supposed to be going to Birmingham to pick up an award for the charity I started.
“We had been nominated and were very excited, but it was canceled because of the pandemic. We were all dressed up with nowhere to go, and I decided to wear my ballgown for a meal with my family.
“I took some pictures and put them on Facebook, just of us having a laugh. A friend messaged me saying I should do something with them because they were funny.
“The next day I set up the Facebook page Put Your Bins Out In Your Ballgown.”
The group got instant popularity, with people joining it from the whole world. It now has more than 12,000 members and is getting photos from Australia, the US and Hong Kong.
Angie continued: “I just thought it would be for a few of my friends, but by the end of the first day we had 1,000 members – it went crazy.
“It’s gone bonkers, we can’t keep up with the demand. It’s all people who are in lockdown, the idea is not to save anything for a better day but to enjoy it now.
“It’s mostly moms, but there are a few dads. I want children to remember this as the time that mum went mad in her wedding dress.
“I want them to remember all the fun things rather than the people in hazmat suits, I want them to remember us making the most of it.”
