A Pride Moment For London Zoo Penguins

The first gay pride march in London was held on 1st July 1972 and was arranged by several organizations.

It had approximately 2000 participants. That was one landmark move London saw.

Another landmark move is awaiting London. The Regent’s Park zoo will be organizing a Penguin pride march next weekend which will be coinciding with the human pride parade.

This zoo became famous for its few same-sex animal couples which inhabit their zoo. This makes it the perfect reason why it should be coinciding with humans’ pride.

Reggie and Ronnie are two penguins which got together in 2004. They also adopted and started parenting an egg which was abandoned by another couple the following year.

They started co-parenting Kyton, their adopted nestling. They are still going rock solid as a couple and are many a time found snuggling in their nest box.

The zoo decided to announce this remarkable step by giving a banner to their penguins. This banner read ‘some penguins are gay, get over it.’ The charity ‘Stonewall’ promotes equal rights by the same name, ‘Get Over It.’

Ninety-one other penguins share their home with this couple in the same zoo. Many other same-sex penguins are also there.  The other two famous among them are Martin and Dev and Zimmer and Nadja.

But this zoo isn’t the only one to have same-sex animal couples. In May, an aquarium in Ireland said that their place was full of same-sex penguins. In fact, as per them, more than half of the penguins that were in a relationship were gay.

They said that some of their Gentoo penguins had also adopted nestlings and were now raising them together.

On 5th July, the London zoo will be holding a Pride-themed night as a part of the celebration. This is to make their visitors aware of gender, same-sex couples and mating within the animal kingdom.

In general, more than 450 animal species have been observed to be in a same-sex relationship which includes courtship, sex and co-parenting. Penguins are quite famously in same-sex relationships.
