Colin Weir and his wife Chris won one of the biggest Euromillions jackpots in the UK in July 2011.
Sadly, Colin passed away after a short illness.
The couple, who have two grown-up children together, announced their divorce last year after almost four decades of marriage.
“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Colin Weir early today after a short illness,” said a spokesperson for his lawyers. “We would ask for privacy for his family and friends at this distressing time.
“No further comment will be made other than to offer sincere thanks to the staff of University Hospital Ayr for their care and compassion.”
Colin, 71, used to be a TV cameraman while Chris was a psychiatric nurse. The two rose to fame when they scooped the £161 million prize in 2011.
One of the first items they purchased was a checked sports jacket. They also bought £850,000 Knock House, a 4-bed house with 23 acres of woodland and gardens on the outskirts of Largs.
“We didn’t want to go away and live on a small island with no contact with the people who are important to us,” Colin said at that time.
The two announced last year that they wanted to split and the confirmation of their divorce was released in September.
In 2013, they set up The Weir Charitable Trust, giving donations to a community football club. The couple also invested in Patrick Thistle Football Club that led to its new name The Thistle Weir Youth Academy.
The club wrote on Twitter: “It is with deep sadness that we confirm that lifelong Jags fan Colin Weir passed away earlier today.
“On behalf of everyone at Partick Thistle, our love, thoughts and prayers are with the family and close friends of Colin at this most difficult time.”
