Whenever you get into a relationship, it’s understood that you share a bond that goes deeper than what you normally share with your friends.

And it’s not just some one-off thing. It’s a bond that gets strengthened or weakened, depending on how you interact with each other every day.

For Zion Martyn, 23, and Poppy Fairbairn, 26, from the Gold Coast, Australia, strengthening those bonds is a matter of course for them.

Zion and Poppy are both parts of an acrobatic stunt team and have been a couple for more than four years. They first met at circus school and theirs is not your run-of-the-mill relationship.

They incorporate gymnastics into their life even beyond the circus ring. For example, they can be seen brushing their teeth together with Poppy standing on Zion’s shoulders. The fruits of their intense training are quite evident as they can even be seen working on their laptops perched on each other’s heads.

Poppy said: “Being an acrobatic couple takes a lot of work but is always worth it.

“You spend 24 hours, seven days a week together and if you don’t have an incredibly good bond, it won’t work out.

“We only graduated from circus school so we have been touring all over Australia with Circus Oz and Circus Rio since then and now are doing a one year contract on the Gold Coast.”

Circus Oz was founded in December 1977 thanks to funds from the Australian Performing Group. It first performed in March 1978. Circus Oz was actually formed by fusing two existing groups that were well-known at the time: Soapbox Circus, formed in 1976, and the New Ensemble Circus, which was established in 1973. Circus Oz is currently the world’s longest-running circus company.

Poppy and Zion are experts in pointe adagio, pass juggling, and Icarian. They are also in a show called SUAVE, for the Pink Flamingo Spiegelclub, where they are the lead characters.

Poppy said: “Pointe adagio is where Poppy balances on my head and shoulders on ballet pointe.

“We are the only Australians to perform this act, it is very difficult as the flyer, me, must be well trained in ballet and it takes over six months of doing it before Zion’s shoulders got used to it.”
