When you mention commercial airplanes, what immediately comes to mind are crowded aisles, screaming infants, or even rude seatmates.
Only Business and First Class exempts you from those potential hassles but you still have a lot of people within close proximity even then.
Which is why a Lithuanian man was pleasantly shocked when he found out that he was the only passenger on a Boeing 737 flying from Lithuania to Italy.
Skirmantas Strimaitis was headed to Bergamo in Italy from Vilnius in Lithuania for a skiing holiday on March 16. But much to his surprise, as soon as he boarded the plane got ready for takeoff.
All he had for company was the two pilots and the five cabin crew who were ready to take care of his every need during the two-hour flight. Considering that a Boeing 737 can seat 188 passengers, Strimaitis had a lot of wiggle room.
As to how such a lucky instance came to pass, the Novaturas travel agency explained that the plane had been chartered to fly a group home from Italy. In order to avoid flying empty for the return trip from Lithuania to Italy, one-way tickets were sold.
It turned out that Strimaitis was the only passenger who bought a ticket. He said that the two-hour flight was “a once in the lifetime experience.”
He took selfies that showed him beaming from ear-to-ear as he sat back to enjoy the spacious and peaceful ride.
While this might have been a once in a lifetime experience for Strimaitis, this wasn’t the first time that a single passenger was in a commercial flight.
In July last year, 28-year-old Saad Jilani also happened to be the only passenger on a flight from Corfu, Greece, to Birmingham, England as he was returning from a friend’s wedding in Greece.
He was all praises for the Jet2Airways staff, describing them as “amazing” and “very excited” to give him the rare experience.
Jilani described the flight as the best of his life and the pilot even announced at the end: “The eagle has landed.”
A woman named Latsamy McAdoo from the US also experienced a similar pleasure in January last year on a flight from Bangkok to Koh Samui island in Thailand.
As soon as she had boarded the A319 jet, she was shocked when a member of the cabin crew started closing the doors.
