Luther actor Luke Westlake took his own life at the age of 26 after struggling with lack of work during the lockdown.
According to the reports, the 26-year-old rising star, who appeared in the TV series Luther, texted his ex to warn her that he wanted to take his own life on the night before his body was found hanging.
As the inquest heard, the young actor was struggling with his mental health after the coronavirus pandemic and lockdown left him without work. He was allegedly also dealing with the breakdown of his longtime relationship.
The tragic suicide took place during the summer of 2020, whereas Westlake’s body was discovered on June 18. He previously attempted to take his life on two occasions in April and early June.
“Luke was aged 26 years at the time of his death. He has a history of anxiety and depression and substantial misuse by way of alcohol and cannabis, used as a coping mechanism,” Assistant Coroner Michael Walsh told the inquest.
“He had reported childhood abuse and did not agree with plans of clinicians to deal with substance abuse before he had some treatment for trauma when he was younger.”
As it was concluded, the young actor died by hanging, whereas a post mortem examination revealed high amounts of THC were present in his body at the time of the incident.
“Luke found it difficult to deal with stressful triggers – his relationship and his employment. It was noted that it was not uncommon for him to threaten to harm himself – such an occasion occurred on June 17,” Walsh added.
“Unfortunately, he was found the next day with a ligature around his neck at 8.46am. He had threatened to take his life and had taken cannabis shortly before he died.”
