The balance of the world, whether you are interested or not, is shifting, and it’s not even slow.
The ebb and tide of the balance has fluctuated during the 4 years of Donald Trump’s presidency at the White House. Regardless of the results of this year’s reelection, the indelible marks and the impacts that the US has with its allies has been undermined seriously, and Trump has just made his final statement by pulling off US troops from Germany. All 12,000 of them.
The US forces in Germany symbolized the seemingly everlasting strengths of US-EU relations, all substituted with NATO headquarters and coalitions stemming from their stationing after WWII.
For more than half a century, these forces were substituted for the guaranteeing of non-belligerent peacemaking in the continent.
Their presence not only vouched for Germany’s, but for the whole members of the free world and the thinly-masked tensions between them and the Soviet influences.
Trump finished that wholesome history with tweets last week. “Germany pays Russia billions of dollars a year for Energy, and we are supposed to protect Germany from Russia. What’s that all about?” Trump wrote in one post. “Also, Germany is very delinquent in their 2% fee to NATO. We are therefore moving some troops out of Germany!”
The head of the German parliament’s foreign relations committee, Norbert Roettgen, replied on Twitter Wednesday, saying, “Instead of strengthening #NATO it is going to weaken the alliance.
The US’s military clout will not increase, but decrease in relation to Russia and the Near & Middle East.” Bavarian governor Markus Soeder also criticized Trump: “Unfortunately this seriously damages German-American relations.
A military benefit cannot be seen. It weakens NATO and the U. S. A. itself. ”Russia, however, seemed to enjoy the decision, as their spokesperson was kind enough to put out a statement saying: “We never hid that [we think] the less American solders there are on the European continent the calmer it is in Europe.”
This means an end of an extension of the Truman Doctrine, inspired by Franklin D.
Roosevelt, America’s 32nd president, based on idealism and ideological Realpolitik. Now it has come to this.
Although the room is still up for discussion as this troop removal would take years in the process, Trump’s reelection would fortify a very challenging move in US’ “governance” power in world politics. If you liked this article, please LIKE SHARE AND COMMENT below!
