A farmer from Belarus has adopted a lost bear after the cub wandered onto his farm and the officials suggested the animal should be put down.
As planetaBelarus originally reported, the incident occurred at a small village in Borisovsky, Belarus, where Nikolay Vasilievich Terletsky was greeted by an unexpected visitor – a bear cub.
Since the bear cub wasn’t with its family and it was still too young to be taken by any zoo, the authorities suggested putting it to sleep. The other alternative was for the farmer to return it to the woods.
However, Mr. Terletsky knew that either of the options provided would be a death sentence for the cub that wasn’t old enough to take care of itself.
After huntsmen failed to find the cub’s mother following days of searching, the authorities finally gave in and decided to let the farmer keep the bear at his farm.
The cub, named Vasilisa, even received its own ‘passport’ that lets it stay on the farm where it will be raised in the presence of humans and other animals.
As Terletsky explained, he intends to build a big enclosure where the bear will be able to move around freely without posing a danger to anyone as it grows up.
The farmer, who focuses on fish farming, also plans on creating an observation deck that will allow tourists to see the bear once he opens up the enclosure for touristic purposes.
While it is unknown what the future has in store for Vasilisa, one thing is certain – the cub was given a second chance at life after wandering onto the farmer’s land.
