A man who was trying to reach London from Nottingham amid the coronavirus lockdown just so he can purchase cheaper bread was arrested for driving at 110mph.
The man was caught traveling on the M1 motorway last Sunday.
When asked about the reason for traveling at such a high speed with two kids, the fellow revealed that he intended to buy bread from London as it was less costly there.
The Leicestershire Police reported the case to court for further proceedings while also charging the dude with two fixed penalty notices.
One of the notices included a £60 fine imposed for violating the recently approved Health Protection Regulations in view of the coronavirus pandemic.
The other one was related to excessive speed, the amount of which has to be decided by the court.
Police in Nottingham also came across a similar situation last week when they stopped and searched a person with a green shoulder bag, containing bundles of cannabis.
When inquired about them, the man said: “I’m buying in bulk because you can’t get out because of the lockdown.”
Inspector James Walker, who is the head of the Covid-19 task force to enforce lockdown with the help of community protection officers, police constables, and community support officials, said it almost seems like ‘Christmas Day every day’ because the majority of the people are staying inside.
“Acquisitive crime has gone down because people are at home, so there is less burglary and less people on the streets to commit robberies,” said Walker.
“Shops are shut so there are less shop thefts. Therefore, the people who use drugs have got less money to buy them.
“I don’t think it’s stopped but we are not seeing it in its usual guise. How it has changed? It is difficult to say yet but it is still happening.”
