An overjoyed Florida man was in for a shock of his lifetime after it turned out the ‘villa’ he thought he was buying for $9,000 was actually just a tiny strip of land worth no more than $50.
Thinking he was in for a bargain, Kerville Holness bid $9,100 on what he thought to be a house worth over $170,000 in an online auction.
As it turned out, however, the man was bidding on the tiny strip of grass that runs between the two homes in the area. Despite the shady auction, the officials claim there’s nothing they can do to get the man a refund.
According to the estimations, the measly strip of land that is no wider than one foot and no longer than 100 feet is worth no more than $50. Nevertheless, the property was presented on an online auction site with the pictures of the homes without clear indications what the buyer would get for the deal.
“It’s deception. There was no demarcation to show it’s just a line going through the [villa duplex], even though they have the tools to show that,” Kerville said in an interview with Sun Sentinel.
“If I’m vindictive enough, I can cut right through the garage wall and the home to get to my air space, but what use would that be to me?”
Following the incident that Mr. Holness believes to be a scam, officials have issued a warning to all auction participants and urged them to take extra caution when bidding on properties.
“He may go to court and find some error in the sale procedure. Generally speaking, he bought what he was supposed to have bought,” Gary Singer, a real estate attorney, added.
