A man and nine children were found in the cellar located below an isolated farmhouse where they were staying for nine years waiting for the world to end.
The incident occurred in Ruinerwold, Netherlands, where the Dutch Police raided a secluded farmhouse after one of six adult children escaped the basement and made it to a local bar from where people called the police after he told them he hadn’t been outside for years.
In the cellar of the home, the 58-year-old man, who was not the father of the ‘kids,’ was found with young adults aged between 16 and 24.
As the authorities discovered, the young adults were in a confused state, whereas some of them didn’t even know that other people still existed. Allegedly, they had been told to stay in the basement to wait for the “end of times.”
“All scenarios are still open. Our research is in full swing and we cannot share more information at this time,” the police said.
“I have never come across anything like this before,” mayor Roger de Groot added in a statement.
“Police investigated after receiving a tip-off from somebody who was concerned about the people’s living conditions and discovered the adults. They lived an isolated lifestyle.”
The authorities were called after Chris Westerbeek, the owner of a local bar, was approached by a 25-year-old man who told him he was underground for nine years after drinking five beers.
“He said he’d never been to school and seemed very confused. He spoke in a childish way,” the bar owner said in an interview with RTVDrenthe.
In the 25-year-old’s home, the police came across a hidden staircase that descended into the cellar where the man’s siblings were staying.
With them was also a man who turned out not to be related to them but was merely staying at the property. While it was said that the kids’ mother was buried somewhere on the farm, it’s unclear where their father is.
According to the reports, the 58-year-old man was looking over the property and managing animals and the garden that allowed the family to survive.
As closest neighbors confirmed, however, the man would never let anyone come close to the house.
“You only had to get close to the yard and he already sent you away. He was watching everything with binoculars,” someone said.
