The man named Prakash Swain immediately called a snake catcher named Purnchandra Das to remove the cobra that was hiding in his storeroom.
The snake catcher Purnchandra Das arrived at Prakash Swain’s home in Bhubneswar in Odisha in eastern India. When he placed the cobra in his bag, he discovered that she has already laid three eggs.
The snake catcher then called Snake Helpline – an NGO dedicated to rescuing and conservation of snakes.
General Secretary of Snake Helpline, Shubhendu Malik asked them to bring the cobra to them immediately.
The NGO then placed the pregnant cobra in a ventilated basket where she laid 20 more eggs.
Mr. Malik said he had never seen a cobra laying eggs and it was an incredible moment for him.
Mr. Malik said: “It is not a typical sight when we see a cobra laying eggs. For any snake enthusiast and conversationalist, it is an exciting moment so we filmed it in a mobile camera.”
“The cobra was found coiled around at the storeroom of Mr. Swain’s house at around 5:30 am. They called Das for help who later brought the snake to our office. By 1 pm, the snake had welcomed all her eggs.”
The cobra, which laid 23 eggs, has been released into the wild the same day by Mr. Malik who has kept the eggs for artificial incubation.
He said: “We will keep the eggs in artificial incubation for up to 60 days, that is how long snake eggs typically take to hatch. After that, the hatchlings will be released back into the wild.”
