David Earl Miller is the longest-serving death row inmate in Tennessee.
He served 36 years on death row and opted for electrocution as his means of death.
Miller has selected a last meal of fried chicken, biscuits, mashed potatoes and coffee as he waited for his execution from the U.S. Supreme Court.
He still had two last-minute petitions asking the court to delay or stop his execution, according to the Daily Mail.
Miller was convicted of killing a 23-year-old woman named Lee Standifer in Knoxville in 1981.
“It was just a series of random events that led him here and to her and to her innocent life,” said Jim Winston, a retired Knoxville Police Department lieutenant.
“She was just starting a life on her own, and he took all that away from her. What she could have been or what her future might have been if she could have lived… we’ll never know.”
Winston also said that the victim was ‘naïve and trusting, like an innocent child’, saying: “He was a handsome guy. They were about the same age. She would have had no idea. A date to her was probably a walk around the mall, holding hands or him buying her a Coke – and probably buying it with her money.”
Miller is the second Tennessee death row inmate that chose the electric chair in just over a month, after Edmund Zagorski, who was killed on November 1.
63-year-old Zagorski was convicted for the murders of Jimmy Porter and John Dale Dotson in 1983, with prosecutors saying he lured the victims into the woods and promised to sell them marijuana, before killing them and stealing their cash.
Zagorski’s final meal was pig knuckles and pigs tails.
