A 56-year-old father has died of coronavirus after being turned away from three hospitals.
Gary Fowler from Michigan showed coronavirus symptoms and had come in the contact with his father who later tested positive for the virus but still, he was turned away from three hospitals.
Gary started showing symptoms of coronavirus after he visited his father, David Fowler, who later tested positive for coronavirus and died just hours before Gary died.
When Gary noticed coronavirus symptoms, he went for a test but he was denied a test or treatment from three hospitals.
On April 7, he died in his home in Grosse Pointe Woods.
Gary’s family is left devastated after his death and believes he was turned away because he was black.
His stepson Keith Gambrell told the Detroit Free Press: “My dad passed at home, and no one tried to help him. He asked for help, and they sent him away. They turned him away.”
Keith revealed his father turned away from the Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit Receiving Hospital, and the Beaumont Hospital after he started showing symptoms of coronavirus.
Gary had a fever of 101, a dry cough, and was struggling to breathe. Despite this, he denied a test or treatment by the hospitals.
Keith told CBS This Morning: “He was begging for his life, but no one would help him at all. Like they just kept sending him away. I honestly believe it was because my father was black. They didn’t honestly take his symptoms seriously enough to give him a test.”
However, Detroit Medical Center denied Gary Fowler came to Detroit Receiving Hospital for any treatment.
Gary’s stepson Keith and his two brothers, Troy and Ross, have also tested positive for the virus while Gary’s wife Cheryl Fowler has been discharged from the hospital.
The family has created a GoFundMe page in order to raise funds for the family’s medical expenses which have raised more than $9,000 so far.
