In The Hangover movie series, the protagonists wake up from a drunken (and sometimes drug-induced) sleep only to find everything around them awry and with no memory of how things got that way.
The rest of the movie revolves around them trying to find out exactly what wild adventures they did the night before.
They were certainly funny movies but for one guy in China, something similar happened to him but with a more nightmarish outcome because he found his penis nearly chopped cleanly off.
The incident happened on May 7 with Chinese media identifying the man only by the name Tan. The guy had gone out the night before with some friends to eat and drink.
After knocking back half a liter’s worth of strong rice wine, Tan passed out. But at 5 am, his sleep was cut short by a “sharp pain” that woke him up and he discovered that he was drenched in blood.
The hapless 44-year-old discovered upon looking down that his penis hanging by a thin thread of skin as it was almost entirely cut off, reported The Global Times.
Tan yelled for help from his brother and both rushed to the hospital. However, the nature of Tan’s injury was such that the hospital couldn’t perform the delicate operation of re-attaching his penis. Unfortunately, it was the same story with several other hospitals that Tan was taken to.
According to SETN, Tan eventually made his way to Xiangya Hospital of Central South University in Changsha, the capital of Hunan province, where micro-surgeons were able to treat him.
It was a grueling seven-hour operation but they successfully reattached Tan’s penis, including his “urethra, blood vessels, and spongy tissues.”
In the week he was confined in the hospital, doctors and nurses had him under close observation and he has been making a good recovery.
Speaking to Sanxiang Metro newspaper, Associate Doctor Wu Panfeng said that Tan’s penis not being completely severed actually made the repair operation more difficult.
This is because if the penis was completely severed, they could have preserved it in ice until doctors were fully prepared to operate. But in Tan’s case, they could not waste any time to get his penis fully reattached.
Doctors are optimistic that Tan will eventually regain full sexual function.
Still, Tan has been understandably traumatized by the incident. Reports say he was “in a state of shock” and even after a few days had passed still “refuses to communicate with anyone or disclose who carried out the act against him.”
He also didn’t report the incident to the police.
