A 60-year-old man has had a very lucky escape from a huge shark after using his survival instincts.

Nick Minogue from New Zealand was surfing at Pauanui Beach near Auckland when a shark attacked him.

Most people would refuse to move or panic during such a numbing situation but Nick calmed himself down and made sure his next steps were accurate.

In an interview with the New Zealand Herald, the 60-year-old said: “I was quite a long way out, there was quite a solid swell running, I was just paddling along and got hit on the side of my elbow and forearm.

“By the time I realised what was going on, its teeth were definitely latched on to the front section of the board.”

When he realized he had to fight for his life, he attempted to get rid of the shark by punching it in the eye.

“So I actually shouted at it ‘f***off’ and went to punch it in the eye and missed,” he shared. “Then I pulled my fist back and shouted ‘f*** off’ again and got it right smack bang in the eye. It’s quite a big eye, about three knuckles across, and its eye kind of looked up and rolled up.

“In between the two punches it crunched down a bit more on the board and then disengaged its teeth, got its jaws off and then I got brushed by the dorsal fin and the tail fin and swam off.”

One surfer close to the 60-year-old helped him and they paddled as fast as they could. It is not clear what type of shark attacked Nick but experts believe it could be a great white.
