A man who is training to be a dentist has shared how it was like to be raised by a father with Down’s syndrome.
Sadar Issa, a Syrian student, says he had a ‘loving’ childhood in which his dad, Jad, encouraged and supported him to focus on his tasks.
Jad has Down syndrome, a condition caused by a chromosome abnormality and is associated with physical growth delays, characteristic facial features, and mild to moderate intellectual disability.
But the factory worker’s supporting and loving personality means he is appreciated and respected within their local community.
Sadar, whose mom doesn’t have the condition, said to the Syrian Society for Social Development: “I’m proud of my father.”
“Throughout my life, he has been the greatest support for me when I needed it,” he added.
“It’s possible to see when his eyes are filled with joy and satisfaction as if to express: ‘yes, I have Down’s syndrome, but I raised this man and did everything in my power to make him become a doctor and help others’.”
If one parent has the condition, a child has a 35 to 50 percent chance of inheriting it, according to the Down’s Syndrome society.
Sader admitted that people were always curious about the relationship of his parents.
He said to Metro: “One of the concerns people have is ‘how can a woman who doesn’t have Down’s Syndrome marry a man with DS?’
“I believe if the two partners were on the same page then why not get married?
“They are intellectually suitable for each other – very simple but loving and caring people.”
