Man was caught on camera setting himself on fire and casually strolling on the lawn just outside the White House.
In disturbing footage, the unidentified man set himself on fire in the Ellipse Park in Washington D.C. As the man was burning like a torch, the U.S. Secret Service were frantically racing towards him before putting out the fire.
The incident occurred at the popular tourist destination located under one mile away from the White House.
Before the officers doused the flames, the man managed to stay on his feet and walk around casually. As some reports claim, he was most likely wearing a heat-resistant suit that managed to temporarily protect him from the flames.
Nevertheless, TMZ reported that the man suffered severe burns to over 85% of his body. He was taken to a hospital where he is being treated for “life-threatening injuries.”
Following the inferno in front of the White House, over 70 police officers gathered at the scene to secure the area. While there were several visitors in the man’s proximity, no one got injured by the incident.
“At 12:22 p.m., officers from the United States Park Police and United States Secret Service responded to a report of an adult male who reportedly lit himself on fire on the Ellipse near 15th and Constitution Avenue,” the National Park Service spokesman revealed in an interview with DailyMail.
“USSS personnel extinguished the fire within seconds. The individual was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
“The incident is under investigation. No additional information is available at this time.”
The Washington Fire Department spokesperson also spoke out and said:
“I can confirm that we’ve transported one patient with burns from the Ellipse and we’re now on the scene assisting law enforcement.”
