A man has forged divorce documents to officially end a relationship with his wife before making a run for it.
Police are on the hunt for 51-year-old Paul Nixon from Texas, US, after the man got accused of aggravated forgery due to submitting fraudulent papers in order to divorce his wife.
According to the reports, Paul filed for a divorce just one day after the Valentine’s Day with his marriage legally dissolved in April after a judge signed the papers.
While he was happily single for some time, tides soon turned against him as his wife learned of the divorce herself. That’s right, Paul apparently kept the entire divorce thing away from his partner and even went as far as forging her signatures.
“We rarely see something like this. In this particular case, the gentleman decided to go through a divorce but the only problem is, he left his wife out of the process. And that’s a violation of the law here in Texas,” Constable Mark Herman of the Harris County said in an interview with The New York Post.
“His wife was very surprised. She started finding things showing that he was spending money on jewelry, so she confronted him and he told her that they were actually divorced.”
After Paul’s big scheme came to light, the authorities have reinstated their marriage.
“They are still legally married. The fraudulent divorce papers have been retracted,” Mr. Herman added.
“We’ve got teams of officers out looking for him right now,” he said, claiming that the man has gone on the run after realizing he was facing up to 10 years in jail for his actions.
