A 27-year-old man from Langdale Street, Elland, who killed his girlfriend by throwing a mobile phone at her on a date night, has jailed for five years.
After a date night in Halifax town center in November last year, Lloyd Birkby threw a mobile phone at his 26-year-old girlfriend, Levi Ogden.
Levi, a mother-of-two from Calderdale, West Yorkshire, collapsed and Lloyd abandoned her on the street.
She was found with severe injuries in Silver Street in Halifax and was rushed to a hospital where she was pronounced dead.
CCTV footage revealed the moment the couple was arguing after a date night in Halifax town center.
Lloyd was seen throwing the mobile phone at Levi that hit her in the neck and she collapsed.
According to medical reports, she suffered a hemorrhage and then suffered cardiac arrest.
Lloyd abused Levi several times in the past. He pushed, shoved, spat at Levi and even threw objects at her in the past.
After Lloyd admitted killing Levi and leaving her to die alone, he was jailed for five years.
Prosecution Dafydd Enoch QC said: “Mr. Birkby was aggressive in his manner at the time and was clearly under the influence of drink.”
Detective Inspector Natalie Dawson, of West Yorkshire Police, said the incident was tragic and the death of Levi was completely unnecessary.
Dawson said this is a reminder of what can happen when you try to resolve a situation by using force.
Dawson said: “We welcome today’s sentence and hope it can bring Levi’s family some closure knowing the man who caused her death is now behind bars.”
A JustGiving page has been set up to raise funds for Levi’s two young children.
The page has already raised more than £6,700 and tributes are pouring in for Levi on social media after her tragic death.
