A grandfather struggling to cope with the death of his wife went clubbing until morning with his grandson during their trip to Spain.

Last year, 22-year-old Jake Gill moved in with his 84-year-old grandfather, Denis. He said Denis was in a dark place after he lost his wife. His grandfather did not feel like he had much to live for.

So Jake thought it would be perfect to spend holidays in the coastal town of Denia near Benidorm.

Jake told LADbible: “From the age of 11, I spent every summer in Denia with my family; and fell in love with the area.

“The fact my grandparents had been going there for years, to me it felt like home. My family were always there; just everything about it I love. To me it is a home from home.”

Most of their days went accordingly as planned. Much of their time spent relaxing on the beach, playing cards, and sunbathing. Denis even shared some old war stories with his grandson.

But the last night of their holiday trip got a little out of hand when Denis decided it was time for them to experience some local nighttime. It was something they had talked about during the week.

“I thought wow! This is really happening. So we walked over to the club, my Granddad had his walking stick and big coat, and there were lots of people staring – clearly talking about us.” Jake expressed.

“But we got up there and my Granddad loved it. He had never heard any of this music; it was very difficult to talk due to the noise, but my Granddad was so happy just enjoying the music, drinking and looking around at everyone.”

After drinking cokes, a few gin and beers, the two finally called it a night and headed back into their villa at 4:30 am.

“It was so surreal, just amazing. A night I will never forget,” Jake added.

Ever since they returned from the trip, Jake said it has made them closer than before.

“The reason this holiday was so special is because it was just us two – and we were able to have lots of heart to hearts; some memories I will never forget. We got to talk about my nan lots, which was so magical,” said Jake.

“It is hard to explain in words what happened on our holiday but it brought us very close.”

He added: “And he is a much happier person; me moving in and our holiday was life changing for him. Prior, it was ‘oh I don’t know how much longer I have’… now he is talking about when his next trip is. He often goes on trips to Spain with my mum as well.”
