64-year-old Mike Stubbs wanted to make sure that he had the last laugh when he passed away by spelling the word ‘bastard’ with white flowers in his hearse window.
His loved ones honored his wishes by recreating a scene from his favorite show, The League of Gentlemen.
Mr. Stubbs from Carlisle Cumbria passed away on July 18 after fighting against cancer.
Jennifer, his wife, and daughter Lisa asked Tracy Lazonby of the Final Journey funerals to make the unique arrangements.
“He certainly got the whole city laughing and talking. He loved comedy and he loved this sketch,” Tracy said.
She explained on Facebook after the picture of the hearse went viral. “An unusual one today – which we feel requires a little explanation… A request from a dying man with a cheeky sense of humour to replicate his favourite scene from the League of Gentleman TV show at his own funeral.
“He was very much loved by his family and friends and got the last laugh, just like he wanted.”
Tracy added: “I just thought I’d better explain that’s why I posted an explanation.
“When Mike’s family made his funeral arrangements they didn’t think it would be possible to have flowers spelling out that word but anything is possible.
“They didn’t want to cause offence and they were bothered about getting into trouble but they needn’t have worried. He was a fan of the show and it made him laugh.
“Because he’d been ill he had time to plan his funeral and this was what he wanted. His family honoured that.”
Mike Brennan, his friend, wrote: “He was our next door neighbour. You couldn’t wish to have met a lovelier guy, great sense of humour, as everyone can see. God bless, Mike. Privilege to have known you. RIP.”
David Fell said: “It certainly got everyone’s attention, summed up Mike’s sense of humour.”
