A healthy man became severely ill after his dog licked him.
He later passed away as he caught a rare infection from the saliva of his pet.
Doctors said that the 63-year-old man was healthy before the disease struck him down. He stayed over two weeks in hospital with numerous conditions including gangrene, pneumonia, and high fever.
The unidentified man had been infected with Capnocytophaga canimorsus, a bacteria usually transmitted by bites. However, it can also be spread through a lick.
He developed flu-like symptoms for three days when he first visited a hospital. He had difficulty breathing and a fever.
By the time he received medical treatment, he already developed severe sepsis and intensive care was required to try to save his life.
Unfortunately, his condition deteriorated, starting with a rash on his face, bruises in his legs and nerve pain. His liver and kidneys shut down, blood clotted in his blood vessels, and his skin rotted away before resulting in a cardiac arrest.
The man was resuscitated and placed onto life support but doctors still had to fight a hard battle in an attempt to save his life as his health rapidly deteriorated.
He then had a fungal infection in his lungs, causing suspected pneumonia, gangrene in his fingers and toes, and blisters all over his body. He also caught MRSA.
Brain scans revealed the man had a massive build-up of fluid in his brain.
Because of multiple organs failing, his family and doctors decided to turn off the life support.
The team of doctors, led by Dr. Naomi Mader, wrote: “Pet owners with flu-like symptoms should urgently seek medical advice when their symptoms exceed those of a simple viral infection, which in this case were (breathing problems and rash).
“Physicians confronted with such patients should ask about contact with dogs and cats.”
