In India, a villager has been killed by an elephant after locals pelted the elephant with stones after it gave birth to a calf.
Footage showed the elephant trying to drag its newborn as it lays on the ground in Ajnashuli, West Bengal, India after it fell ill and couldn’t get up.
As locals arrived at the scene, they started pelting stones at the animal which made it go berserk.
The elephant chased the crowd and a 27-year-old man named Shailen Mahato was killed.
It is believed that the mother was trying to take her sick calf back to a forest when the villagers started pelting stones at the elephant.
The elephant is still in the area with 10 other elephants who appeared in the area after the incident.
The video of the villagers pelting stones at the elephant was shared online. Internet users slammed the locals for hurting the animal which made it go berserk.
One person commented: ‘Humans are a blight on the world. We are the most dangerous species on this earth.’
Another said: ‘Then he deserved it – wtf are these locals doing – are they not educated – no one here would do that shit – certainly wouldn’t to a lion now would you and how about how terrified the mother elephant was rather than just the villagers – throwing a stone – horrible excuses for humans’
The third one wrote: ‘Treat animals with respect and they may, in turn, treat you with respect. Poor mother was only trying to protect her baby.’
