A young man has passed away from COVID-19 after selflessly asking the doctors to “save someone else’s life” instead.
30-year-old Liam Downing was a UK-based DJ who had been fighting leukemia for the last two years of his life.
Just days before entering his 30s, the man had also contracted the novel coronavirus during his trip to the hospital to tend to a suspected infection.
Since the doctors told the young man that “nothing more” could be done about his terminal cancer, Downing requested them not to get medicated in order to save resources for those who have a fighting chance.
During Liam’s final days, the family was allowed to gather in his room to pay their final goodbyes to the selfless son who chose not to prolong his life for the benefit of strangers.
Paying a tribute to her brother was his loving sister, Laura, who said she would cherish the memories of him forever.
“He has fought leukemia for nearly two years and last week we were told there was nothing more they could do to help him,” she wrote.
“Expecting Liam to have at least a few months he started making a bucket list of things he wanted to do before he died. To then be told he had coronavirus was just devastating.
“We were uncertain whether he was going to see his 30th birthday, which I’m so thankful he did. I’m so unbelievably proud of you Liam! You fought so long and hard but now’s your time to relax.
“I love you Liam forever and always. Sleep tight, spread those wings and you fly high my bro.”
