A wildlife lover who was left furious after he was fined for littering simply because he was feeding seagulls has spoken out about the incident and lashed back at the authorities.
According to 62-year-old Ian Chapman, he was peacefully throwing crumbs of McDonald’s McMuffin at the birds when he was seen by an officer.
As the wildlife lover claims, he was handed a Fixed Penalty Notice despite the fact that the birds ate the food right away.
“I can’t understand. They’re criminalizing hard-working people, for what reason I don’t know,” the 62-year-old said, adding that the Nottingham City Council extorts innocent people through such acts.
“It just seems like extortion to some degree. It’s absolute pettiness and that’s how they create an income.”
Speaking of the incident, the father-of-three added:
“I opened the window and threw two tiny bits of bread from my bun to about 20 seagulls, and that was it.
“You can imagine two pieces of bread between about 20 seagulls. It was gone in seconds.”
Nevertheless, two days later the man received a notice which accused him of “leaving litter and moving away” and throwing “food waste out of the driver’s side window.”
“I tried to explain to the powers that be that if I was intending on littering, I would have thrown more than two bits of bread out of the window,” Chapman, a member of the RSPB and the Bat Conservation Trust, added.
“I would’ve thrown the rest of it, and the packaging. It wasn’t food waste. It was at my expense, these two little bits of bread. It’s not in itself a crime.”
“I would never dream of littering. It seems crazy that they do this to ordinary people,” the man claimed.
