A man won the lottery two times after buying two tickets with the same numbers by mistake.
56-year-old Samir Mazahem from Dearborn Heights, Michigan, came up with a series of numbers based on family birthdays before buying a $2 Mega Millions ticket.
After paying for the ticket, Mr. Mazahem decided to set up his chosen number as favorites in order to easily play them in the future.
“I forgot to save the numbers as favorites in the app, so I went back in and set them up as favorites so I could easily play them in the future,” he told MLive.
After attempting to save his favorite numbers, however, the 56-year-old accidentally bought another ticket with the same numbers.
“What I didn’t realize, is that meant I would be buying a second ticket with the same numbers,” he added.
While the man admitted feeling “a little bummed” after his mistake, he eventually forgot about the mishap and his lottery tickets.
Everything changed, however, when Mazahem logged into his account and realized that he won $1 million two times since both of his tickets had the winning numbers.
“Saying that I was stunned is an understatement,” the 56-year-old said. “It took several days for the reality to set in that my mistake had paid off to the tune of $2million!”
As the lucky lottery player expressed after claiming his $2 million prize, he intends to use the winnings to buy a new house and ensure that he has enough savings for when he retires.
“Winning is exciting and gives me some comfort knowing that when I retire, I will have money in the bank,” Mazahem said.
