A heartbroken man in China has tied the knot with his fiancée’s body during her funeral to show devotion and love for her after she lost her fight against breast cancer.
35-year-old Xu Shinan hoped that the wedding ceremony could fulfill his girlfriend’s dream of being a bride.
His partner of 12 years, Yang Liu, was dressed in a white gown and surrounded by hundreds of pink flowers when brokenhearted Xu read his wedding vows to her.
The nuptial took place on Saturday morning in the funeral parlor in eastern China. It was witnessed by the couple’s families and friends.
Xu said: “Wife, please don’t worry! For me, the rest of my life will be in pain, but I will not give up…”
Yang passed away on October 14 aged 34 after fighting against breast cancer for 5 and a half years.
Xu stayed next to her body since she died, which is folklore in the country to pay respect to the dead.
“My wife used to say that nobody was allowed to cry should she die. I was holding back my tears on the day, but when [her body] was sent for cremation, I couldn’t fight it anymore,” Xu expressed.
Their love story was featured in Dalian Evening News. According to the newspaper, the two were university classmates and fell in love in 2007.
Their life turned upside when Yang started to experience pain in her chest. Yang was 28 years old when she was diagnosed with breast cancer.
She went through multiple rounds of chemotherapy and surgery, but she never cried. She was always cheerful, Xu recalled.
Yang even documented her treatment through her social media account to inspire other cancer patients.
When her condition improved, the couple started to save money for an apartment and their wedding. But her cancer returned after a year before they could get married.
“We went across the nation, seeking medical advice while travelling. It was a happy year after all,” Xu shared.
Unfortunately, Yang’s condition deteriorated and she suffered from a series of complications. She also sustained serious bone fractures because of sneezing.
“I promised to buy her the most beautiful wedding gown,” Xu said. The store owner was so moved by the couple’s love story that he told him to choose whichever gown he wanted.
“All that I can do is to fulfil your wish and letting you wear a wedding dress fulfills my wish,” he added.
Their love story has moved thousands of people. One internet user wrote: “This is true love.”
Another commented: “There should be such a devoted and affectionate man in the world.”
