Man Passed Away After Razor-Wielding Rooster Attacked Him During Illegal Cockfight


A spectator enjoying an illegal cockfight was attacked by a razor-wielding rooster in Andhra Pradesh, India.

Saripalli Venkateswara Rao passed away after the rooster attacked him.

Roosters usually have weapons like blades attached to their legs during a bloody match. They are also overfed and given steroids to make them bigger than their competitors.

Unfortunately for the spectator, he was in the wrong spot when a rooster suddenly kicked free as soon as it was placed in the ring.

The rooster sliced Venkateswara Rao’s stomach and doctors could no longer save him. Many people also had injuries from the incident but only the 55-year-old passed away.

Despite being banned since 1960 with the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, cockfighting is still prevalent in India. It is popular not only in Andhra Pradesh but also in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts of Tulu Nadu region of Kamataka.

Bloody combats to the death are most popular in Andhra Pradesh. Many believe the ‘sport’ is linked to a sacred ceremony or an ancient religious ritual.

Years ago, police officers were encouraged not to stop a fight held during the Sun Gold Festival in the Bharatiya Janaa Party district committee as it was a part of a ritual. Officers said they would not intervene as long as it was held in a temple.

Cockfighting is not the only bizarre sport out there. Cricket fighting, which dates back to the Tang dynasty in 618 AD, is still a popular sport in China.

According to New York Post, $140,000 was bet on crickets after 300 people attended the fights. The sport was banned in the 1960s but Reuters reported that it is becoming popular again.
