A Canadian man details his odd and incomparable relationship with his fully grown polar bear pet.
Mark Dumas, from Abbotsford, British Columbia, and Agee, —an 800lb polar bear has an odd relationship. They do almost everything together, including swimming together and playing wrestling on the grass.
The fully grown bear has been with Mark since she was six weeks old, and the two have been inseparable ever since.
Mark and Agee possess an incredible band to the point that Mark allows Agee to bite his jaw without him ending up in the hospital!
Despite their close relationship, Mark strongly discourages this type of interaction when it comes to dealing with wild animals.
According to Mark, Agee became an exception because she has built her trust in him and his wife.
“If anyone else tried this they would end up as Agee’s dinner,” he said. “I have worked with bears in this way for over 40 years, so I can read Agee’s body language and know how to behave safely around her.”
“But Agee is the boss and it’s her rules that count,” Mark explained.
Mark and his wife, Dawn, first met Agee as a cub from the Kolmarden Zoo in Sweden and fell in love with her since then.
The couple had to work hard in acquiring the best place where the polar bear could live, which included a spacious piece of rented land. They have raised Agee on a diet composed of protein-rich foods such as salmon, chicken, or other meats, and get her carbohydrates from high-quality dog food along with prescribed vitamins.
In the wild, polar bears often get their nutrients and feats on seals in particular, so Mark and Dawn have always been keen on giving Agee the same amount of supplements needed.
Mark made it clear that he will never underestimate the Agee’s power and is very much aware of its strength, but that doesn’t stop him from taking care of his pet bear.
“We wrestle for fun and sometimes we fall asleep on the grassy lawn together. It’s a great way to unwind after a bad day,” Mark said.”I feel pretty privileged to be able to nap with my head resting on a fully grown polar bear.”
Agee seems to be fond of Mark after spending her life with him.
As Dawn explained, the polar bear isn’t too happy when women other than his wife speak to Mark.
“She’s happy with me doing it, but if any other women are around, she gets very possessive of him,” Dawn explained.
Unfortunately for Agee, the bear cannot return to the wild because polar bears are already domesticated. But the good news is that she belongs to a family who respects her and is given mutual respect in return.
