A 62-year-old man suffered an erection for four hours while receiving treatment in a hospital in France.
Doctors have warned coronavirus may cause priapism after an elderly man from France suffered a four-hour erection caused by trapped blood in his private organ, which was discovered to be filled with blood clots.
Thrombosis or blood clotting has been reported as a life-threatening complication in up to one-third of patients with coronavirus.
When blood clots block veins or arteries, it can result in strokes and heart attacks. The blockages can also cause priapism.
However, this is the first time Covid-19 resulted in priapism. The 62-year-old spent two weeks on a ventilator and has finally recovered from coronavirus.
Medics at Center Hospitalier de Versailles in Le Chesnay wrote about the patient and published it in The American Journal of Emergency Medicine.
Dr. Myrian Lamamri said this is the first time ‘penile thrombosis’ has occurred to a patient with coronavirus.
The man experienced a dry cough, fever, diarrhea, and difficulty breathing. He was taken to a hospital where he was diagnosed with coronavirus. Doctors also found ‘previously unidentified priapism’ during a physical examination.
The 62-year-old suffered low-flow priapism, which occurs when blood becomes trapped in the erection chambers.
Doctors applied an ice pack to the area and after four long hours, doctors decided to use a needle to such out the blood.
“Although the arguments supporting a causal link between COVID-19 and priapism are very strong in our case, reports of further cases would strengthen the evidence,” doctors wrote.
“The clinical and laboratory presentation in our patient strongly suggests priapism related to SARS-CoV-2 infection.”
The patient was given medication to prevent blood clotting and was injected with drugs to normalize his nervous system.
