A cat was walking over a freezing, ice-covered Lake George in Hobart, Indiana when it fell in the lake and got trapped inside.
21-year-old Darden Schurg, who was visiting his father in Hobart, Indiana, spotted the poor cat and decided to save it.
Darden, a senior wrestler, ranked #1 in the Division III 174-pound weight class at Wabash College, dived into the frozen lake wearing only his boxer shorts to save the trapped cat.
Darden’s older brother also tried to rescue the cat but he could not do it because of the freezing temperatures but Darden managed the save the cat.
He said: “I simply knew what I had to try to do and from there, it just kind of was what it was.”
His sister-in-law Hilda Schurg filmed the dramatic rescue and shared the video online which instantly went viral online. People thanked Darden for saving the life of the poor cat.
One user commented on the video: ‘What a hero!!! Badass!! Makes me happy to see that there are great humans in this world’ while another user said: ‘I saw the “swimming” stroke and thought he might drown. TG he was ok.’
The third one said: ‘Darden Schurg you are quite one among the best individuals I do know…and I really mean that!’ while another wrote: ‘All American, cat savior… what’s next Superman?!?!? Good job buddy.’
Darden risked his own life to save the cat and he definitely needs appreciation for this.
Another man. who was trying to rescue a dog from an icy pond at a northeast-side apartment complex in water, lost his own life. We are thankful to Darden for saving the cat despite the freezing temperatures.
We are glad both, Darden and the cat, are safe after the incident.
