This place is filled with all kinds of people, the good, the bad! We hear hundreds of harassment cases where women are the victims.
Recently, Jason Melo, a 26-year-old man was convicted of assault, aggravated coercion, endangering the welfare of a child and menacing.
Jason was prosecuted for forcing his ex-girlfriend to walk down the streets of Harlem naked while he filmed her. The prosecutors proclaimed that he is looking at no less than 7 years in prison.
His ex-girlfriend who is also the mother of their 2-month-old daughter has remained unidentified. She has flown to Florida with her daughter considering their safety while Jason will be prosecuted for all the accusations.
The woman and Jason used to live in their Harlem apartment with their daughter. She told the police that he entered their apartment around 5 in the morning on 17th January 2016. Straightforward, he started arguing with her regarding the pictures and text messages she received from another man.
She said that their relationship was over and she was about to relocate to the Dominican Republic with her daughter. Jason lost his cool and started abusing her physically and verbally for the next two hours. He even threatened her to beat her with a metal Buddha statue.
The prosecutors said that Jason for the next two hours constantly hit the woman on her body and face. They said that he punched her in her stomach, genital areas and ribs and threatened to throw her down the stairs.
During that time, their daughter was left alone on the bed. Jason then forced the woman to march outside the apartment wearing nothing but a towel. He filmed her while she was walking naked. In the video, Jason could be seen cursing her in Spanish, and he even called her a W***E.
When she passed by the garbage cans on the alley, he ripped off her towel and told her that she belongs here, in the garbage.
He later posted the video on social media poking her and making fun of her. The prosecutors argued the judge about giving him the maximum of 7-year sentence due to his behavior in court as well. He was seen laughing and acting remorseless about his conduct.
However, Theodore Herlich, Jason’s lawyer requested the court to give him a lighter sentence stating that Jason reacted this way only because of the photos he found on her phone.
He said that although he agrees that Jason could have handled the situation more civilly and lawfully but it wasn’t just for sport.
We only hope that things like this never happen to any women out there and laws should be flexible enough to provide some serious punishments for these types of offenders.
