A man is under investigation after “accidentally” shooting his fiancée just days before the pair was about to get married.
The incident took place in Ukraine where 44-year-old Dmitry was showing off his new hunting rifle to his friends when he pulled the trigger and fatally wounded 37-year-old Tatyana.
According to the reports, the man was showing his firearm to his friend at the couple’s home in Dnipro. At one moment, however, he pulled the trigger while the weapon was pointed at his fiancée whom he was about to tie the knot with in a matter of days.
“Dmitry was holding the gun at his pelvis level with his right index finger on the trigger when he noticed that the muzzle was pointed at Tatyana,” Oleksiy Kondratev, the family friend who witnessed the shooting, recalled.
“He started to move the muzzle aside and at this moment the gun fired.”
After the mother, who worked as a swimming instructor, was gunned down, her two children, aged 11 and 13, rushed into the room only to find their mum lying lifeless in a puddle of blood.
Following the mother’s passing, the police have launched a murder investigation to get to the bottom of the incident and determine whether Dmitry shot his fiancée on purpose or by mistake.
“The suspect was showing his firearm to a pal when he pointed it at the victim. He claims he accidentally shot at her. The woman died from gunshot wounds,” Anna Starchevska, a spokesperson for the local police, said.
Following his arrest, Dmitry spoke out to his fiancée’s family to apologize for his actions saying he doesn’t know how to live without Tatyana.
“Mum, dad, kids, forgive me for not saving her. You know how much I loved her,” the 44-year-old man reportedly said.
Speaking in the man’s defense was Nila Mymrina, the victim’s mother, who called the shooting a “tragic accident” and insisted that Dmitry should be released because her daughter “was the happiest woman in the world with this man.”
The investigation remains ongoing.
