A 101-year-old man from Italy who was born during the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic managed to recover from coronavirus.
CNN reported that the Italian man from Rimini, known as Mr. P, was discharged a few days after he was hospitalized.
Mayor Gloria Lisi has described Mr. P as ‘truly extraordinary’ and said that his recovery gives some ‘hope for the future.’
“Mr. P made it. The family brought him home yesterday evening. To teach us that even at 101 years, the future is not written,” Lisi said.
Mr. P was born in 1919, while the world was struggling with the 1918 influenza pandemic, the most severe pandemic in recent history. It is estimated that one-third of the world’s population or about 500 million people became infected, with at least 50 million deaths worldwide.
As of this writing, there are more than 720,000 coronavirus cases worldwide, with at least 33,966 deaths.
Over 10,700 of total deaths have been in Italy. Most of fatalities have been elderly and those who have underlying health conditions.
The World Health Organization Director Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus recently said: “We need to work together to protect older people from the virus.
“They are valued and valuable members of our families and communities, but they’re at higher risk of the more serious complications of Covid-19.”
To protect people who are more at risk, it is important to maintain a safe distance away from them and follow the strict guidelines issued by the government.
“Ensure their needs are being met for food, fuel, prescription medication, and human interaction,” Ghebreyesus added. “Physical distance doesn’t mean social distance.
“We all need to check in regularly on older parents, neighbours, friends, or relatives who live alone or in care homes in whatever ways possible, so they know how much they’re loved and valued.”
