Life is so unpredictable sometimes, we get unexpected things at the most unexpected times.
But, as we say life must go on.
A Charlotte man who says he was recently diagnosed with Stage 4 liver cancer just won $250,000 in the North Carolina Education Lottery, according to state officials.
According to the North Carolina Education Lottery website, Richard Beare, of Charlotte, won $250,000. It happened after his wife asked him to stop to get a Powerball ticket. But, that’s not how he won.
He decided to get some scratch-off tickets: four Carolina Black tickets. He said the fourth one was the winner.
What will he do with the money?
Richard Beare says he intends to travel abroad with his wife “while I can still enjoy myself.”
“It’s such a relief,” Beare said in a state press release. “I rarely play the lottery. I only stopped because my wife asked me to get a Powerball ticket since the jackpot was so high.”
“I recently got diagnosed with stage four liver cancer,” Beare told the lottery. “I want to travel while I can still enjoy myself. My wife has always wanted to go to Italy since that’s where her descendants are from. Now I can take her.”
“When I saw that I had matching numbers, I asked her, ‘What does it mean if I match the numbers?’ She said it meant I won a prize,” said Beare.
“I told her, ‘Well, I guess we just won $250,000 then.’ She was in shock and just kept looking back and forth to me and the ticket.”
Beare claimed his prize on Monday at the North Carolina lottery headquarters in Raleigh and took home $176,876 after taxes.
The Carolina Black lottery ticket launched early March and has four top prizes of $250,000. Two top prizes remain, according to lotto officials.
