Doctors were stunned to discover a knife, eight spoons and a screwdriver inside a 35-year-old man, who had been complaining of unbearable stomach pain.
Surgery was performed immediately when doctors saw the tip of a knife had already punctured a hole in his stomach.
Two toothbrushes and two screwdrivers were also found inside him, doctors revealed. It is believed the patient’s eating habit was caused by a mental disorder.
The Indian man was referred to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital in Mandi, Himachal Pradesh to determine the underlying cause of his pain.
X-ray test revealed spoons in his stomach, but it was just the tip of the iceberg. Doctors also saw a knife that seemed to be piercing through the patient’s stomach.
4-hour emergency surgery was performed to remove the items before they could do additional damage.
One of the doctors said: “We could already see the tip of the knife protruding from inside his stomach. Later we operated him without wasting any time but discovered more objects inside.
“There was a knife, eight spoons, two screwdrivers and two toothbrushes inside as we continued to operate his stomach.”
A metal bar was also retrieved from his stomach. It is understood the 35-year-old was suffering from a psychiatric disorder that caused him to eat objects.
Local reports said that he is now being cared for by his family.
“My heart melts for this man, obviously mentally ill, unfortunate there are millions of such patients uncared for in the world!!” one person said.
“Poor guy. Yes, it does sound like he suffers from a mental disorder. I hope he gets the help he needs to move forward and become healthy. Best wishes to him and his family,” another commented.
