A man faces life in prison for strangling his wife so he could get her insurance and frozen embryos to start a new life with his male lover.
Mitesh Patel from Middlesbrough, Australia wanted to get £2million from the death of his partner and use her frozen embryos so he could start a new life with Dr. Amit Patel, his gay lover.
He tried to make the murder look like a burglary at their home, which is not far from the pharmacy they ran together.
However, his lies were uncovered when investigators examined his movements using the iPhone Health App, which he and his wife used.
The app tracked his steps throughout the day and it then disproved the murderer’s lie that Jess was killed by an intruder.
After her death, Patel’s Health app monitored his frantic activity, running around the house as he staged the burglary. He ran up and down the stairs while the body stayed still.
Her phone then moved 14 paces as Patel took it from her body and threw it outside to make it look as though the ‘thief’ had dropped it as he ran away.
34-year-old Jessica was aware that her husband was in love with another man he met on a dating app. She stayed quiet for 6 years knowing that her husband was having casual sex with numerous strangers.
It was also discovered that Patel made internet searches before Jess’s death, including: “I need to kill my wife.’
Even though they were going through three unsuccessful rounds of IVF, he admitted that he was planning to kill Jess and take the baby to Sydney.
Messages between Patel and his wife revealed that she was resisting continuing with IVF because he was having sex with other men.
During the trial, Patel admitted: “I should have been honest with myself and I should not have married Jess.”
He added: “I cannot explain how I felt. It was the fear of being exposed as an Asian gay man, that was one thing and the other was that I was not going to let Jess down. I had married Jess and all her dreams were going to come to a crashing end.”
