Despite numerous conflicts both big and small around the world, in general, the world has still become a safer place for ordinary people. Peasants used to worry that the next band of armed men galloping towards town may just as soon pillage them as pass-through. But with organized police forces in most developed countries, this type of occurrence is less likely to occur (and would be swiftly dealt with if it did).
Still, walking around in cities can still be dangerous if one is not careful. Women tend to get targeted because criminals think that they are easier prey. But one video showed one woman who managed to turn the tables on her attacker in the elevator thanks to her knowledge of martial arts.
The incident happened in an elevator somewhere in China late at night. The video starts with a man and a woman alone in the elevator. The woman can be seen checking her cellphone while her attacker quietly sidles up behind her and looks over her shoulder. At first, she just gives the man a glare which is enough for him to back off.
The woman puts her cellphone away but the man soon approaches her again and puts a hand on her shoulder. The woman quickly reacts by pushing him away and following up with several well-placed strikes that instantly incapacitate him.
This definitely shows the value of a woman learning proper self-defense skills but one should also understand that the concept of self-defense is not limited to the physical confrontation. It starts by doing everything to make sure that one doesn’t become a target in the first place.
Criminals like to choose victims who look like easy targets.
In the case of the woman, she was alone and also engrossed with her cellphone so she wasn’t aware of her surroundings. If she was more alert, she could have chosen to not get in the elevator with the man or have kept her back against the wall the whole time.
If she did that, then she might not have needed to fight in the first place. While this incident ended well for the woman (who’s not cheering, right?), we should also remember that things could have gone differently if the man had a weapon, was bigger or had a companion. As they say, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure so stay safe and try to avoid situations that can easily compromise your safety.
