Many dogs and cats are placed up for adoption, and each one of them has a heartbreaking story.
They all deserve to be loved and well taken care of, but not all of them get the chance to have a loving home.
A black lab was only eight weeks old when he and his three siblings were brought into a shelter. His siblings were adopted right away but little Emerson was very sick and people didn’t want to take him.
Emerson was neglected when he was born and he was in a bad shape when taken into NFR Maine. The black lab was having seizures and doctors and staff couldn’t determine what was wrong.
Attentive staff kept on fighting for him even when Emerson broke out with Parvo or canine parvovirus, a highly contagious viral disease that causes dogs to have intestinal problems and lose weight.
It was a difficult start but little Emerson managed to pull through. He is now a healthy, happy dog!
But there’s one more thing he has to fight for the rest of his life: being deaf.
It is not clear if he was born that way or if he lost his hearing during seizures, but that didn’t stop him from being a loving pup.
Emerson got the attention of Nick Abbott who gave him a forever home.
“He came straight to me…and stopped right at my foot and stayed there,” said Nick, “you can tell he kind of picked me.”
Nick was also born deaf but he speaks well. He finalized the adoption papers and the black lab immediately became a member of his family.
“I knew right then that we would get along well and understand each other pretty good,” Nick expressed.
He has taught his pup sign language commands, and their bond grew deeper and deeper.
Emerson knows many hand commands, including lie down and sit. He’s a very smart pup! There’s no doubt the two of them will be happy together.
