A 26-year-old man says he feels empowered to wear dresses and skirts after seeing Harry Style’s Vogue cover.
Connor Keanney said the former One Direction singer gave him the inspiration and made him feel more ‘confident’ to change his style.
“I’m the real-life Boy in the Dress. Wearing skirts and dresses isn’t an issue, clothes are clothes, it’s material to me,” he expressed.
“If I look good and I want to wear it I’ll wear it. Dressing like this has given me a big confidence boost,” Connor continued.
He was 16 years old when he came out as part of the LGBTQ+ community and admitted that he was not very ‘confident.’ But thanks to Harry Styles, he felt empowered to wear high-fashion skirts and dresses.
“My style has definitely evolved over time. I wasn’t very confident when I was younger with a lot of things,” Connor explained.
“I came out as part of the LGBTQ+ community when I was 16 and then I hid how I wanted to dress,” he said.
“In more recent times you’ve got people who are non binary, you’ve got Harry Styles who is a straight man but wears whatever he wants, and seeing that just boosted my confidence.
“I don’t believe in labels, clothes are clothes. It’s just material.”
Connor shares photos of his dresses on social media. He also started a series he called ‘Style Steals’ which sees him recreate television characters’ iconic appearance using second-hand clothes.
“I’m quite a bargain hunter so I don’t set myself a budget. Usually I buy whatever catches my eyes and I take it from there,” he said.
“With Style Steals I do research and, for the time being, I look at online charity shops for what I need.”
He continued: “I used to be one of those people freaked by the idea of musty, smelly piles of clothes worn by old people. I would think ‘oh it’s second-hand, someone’s died in that’.
“If people go to vintage shops or search vintage stuff online they’re going to find the most amazing things [and shopping this way is] good for the environment because you’re recycling it.
“I picked up a real Versace top for £15 from a charity shop, I nearly died. All you’ve got to do is put it in a washing machine or get it dry cleaned, which costs nothing.”
