In recent news, the young man who has been confronted by US Army Drill Sergeant Jonathan Pentland is claimed to be mentally ill, being admitted into a facility just days after the incident occurred in a gated community.
The drill sergeant, Pentland, has been charged with third degree assault and battery, exclaiming to Deandre that he’s “come to the wrong neighborhood, motherf***er,”
The victim, identified through social media, has also been faced with charges of trespass and animal cruelty under his name. Due to his mental stability, he is incapable of standing trial, sources say.
Deandre claimed that he lived in the neighborhood and was walking back to his house, yet the incident was caught on tape and it sparked Black Lives Matter demonstrators to appear at Pentland’s house since it first occurred.point 331 |
Although Deandre seemed confused, he remained composed throughout the situation while the drill instructor accuses him in an aggressive manner for “hanging around” their gated community for 15 minutes.point 185 | 1
The sergeant repeatedly yells at Deandre, “You’re in the wrong neighborhood. I ain’t playing with you. I’m about to show you what I can do. Check it out, you can either walk away or I’m going to carry you a** out.”
Deandre does have a close relative who lives ten minutes away from where the scene first started, but sources say that Deandre does not live there himself.
The drill instructor fled his house alongside his wife Cassie, being suspended from his role until further notice.
Demonstrators of the Black Lives Matter movement appeared in front of Pentland’s house, and if the soldier is found guilty, he could face up to a $500 fine and 30 days in jail.
He is now listed as detained and even issued a personal recognizance bond. Originally, he had been given a citation as a consequence for slapping Deandre’s phone out of his hand and cracking it, he has been handed the citation for malicious injury to property.
Pentland was not arrested on the day of the incident since officers took their time to investigate the case as properly as possible. Pentland also has not named the victim and adds that he would not face the charges. He comments that the man had been involved in other incidents leading up to this one, yet “none of them justified the assault that occurred.”
