Owen Filer celebrated in 100th birthday and wowed the guests with his dance moves. Despite his age, he lives alone in Cwmbran, South Wales, and can even cook, clean, and look after himself.
He says long walks and a nightly ritual of a small glass of whiskey and a piece of dark chocolate have contributed to his long life.
The former Royal Military Policeman said: “I feel very lucky and very grateful to have come this far. Clearly someone upstairs is looking after me.
“I love music and even though I’ve got arthritis in one of my knees as soon as “In the Mood” came on I decided to get up and give it a go.
“I thought it’s my birthday party so I can do what I like.”
Owen was married to wife Elunyd until she passed away in 2004. He worked for British Rail starting at age 15 and was in India during the Second World War.
He had four children with his wife and the family has expanded to include ten grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.
His son Barry, 70, drove Owen to the party in a luxury car specially rented for that day.
With his favorite songs In The Mood, Wake Up Little Susie, and Rock Around The Clock playing, Owen livened up the dance floor with his moves.
Barry said: “He was a little apprehensive about the party beforehand because he wasn’t sure who would come. In the end, 80 people came along.
“As soon as the music started he got going and didn’t stop till 11 pm.
“I’m sure he’ll keep on dancing away. He lives totally independently and does all his own cooking, washing and ironing.
“He goes out every morning to get a loaf of bread and some milk and writes to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.”
Owen also has some tips for people that he based on his many years of experience.
He said: “Look after your body and live healthily.
“I was born just after the end of the First World War and lived through the Great Depression. My father was unemployed and times were tough.
“Work hard at school. Live properly. Everything these days is fast and furious, you can get everything done in minutes. Take time to appreciate the small things.”
