Marine Lieutenant Colonel Stuart Scheller has been relieved of duties after he posted a video demanding senior leaders take accountability for the disaster in Afghanistan.
In a nearly 5-minute video shared on LinkedIn and Facebook, Scheller called out Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley, and other leaders for not “raising their hands and accepting accountability or saying, ‘We messed this up.’”
“The reason people are so upset on social media right now is not because the Marine on the battlefield let someone down,” he said.
“People are upset because their senior leaders let them down. And none of them are raising their hands and accepting accountability or saying, ‘We messed this up,’” Scheller continued.
He said he knew he was risking his stellar 17-year career by sharing the clip. “I have been fighting for 17 years. I am willing to throw it all way to say to my leaders, ‘I demand accountability.’
“I think what you believe in can only be defined by what you’re willing to risk,” he said. “So, I think it gives me some moral high ground to demand the same honesty, integrity, accountability from my senior leaders.”
His video has received more than 3,000 comments and shared over 23,000 times.
In a follow-up post, Scheller said he was relieved of his duties.
Marine Corps spokesperson Maj. Jim Stenger told Daily Mail that Lt. Col. Stuart Scheller was relieved of command “due to a loss of trust and confidence in his ability to command.
“This is obviously an emotional time for a lot of Marines, and we encourage anyone struggling right now to seek counseling or talk to a fellow Marine. There is a forum in which Marine leaders can address their disagreements with the chain of command, but it’s not social media.”
