The dugong is a marine mammal which only grows about 11 feet in length, and the conservation status for this creature is listed as vulnerable by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature.
Recently, a baby dugong was separated from its mother and was lost in southern Thailand.
The marine experts found her and rescued her. The name of the dugong is Marium, and the pictures of marine biologists feeding it with milk and sea grass are going viral on social media.
Marium was found near Ko Poda Island in Kradi during April, and later she was released in another island into the dugong habitat.
Every day the vets go to the Ko Libong Island to locate Marium near the habitat. Every time they go there, she doesn’t swim with her herd and comes straight to them.
The vets and volunteers feed her with seagrass and milk, and she also receives a particular health check.
It seems like Marium has bonded with humans and loves being around them.
Nantarika Chansue who is the director of the Aquatic Animal Research Center of Chulalongkorn University’s faculty of Veterinarian Science is advising the caretakers that she just tries to cling to the boat thinking of it as her mother and it feels like she will get attached to any other dugong like that.
According to the experts, it is important to look after Marium for at least a year till the time she learns to look after herself without any help. Nantarika thinks that dugongs spend more than eight years under their mother’s care and stop feeding on milk after 18 months.
Marium has gained fame on social media after the moment she started bonding with humans in such a heartwarming manner.
